An attractive smile is often the first thing that one notices about others. In addition to creating an attractive appearance, healthy teeth and gums are a basic requirement for good overall health. One cannot have a healthy body without healthy mouth and vice versa. The dentist should be visited at whatever intervals he recommends, usually every six months

The dentist will take a general health and dental health history first appointment. He will then examine the teeth, gums, bite, and al oral tissues – both visually and with x-rays. X-rays constitute a vital part of his examinations. Without them, the dentist cannot examine the surfaces between teeth or the three fifths of the tooth beneath the gums. Other diagnostic tests may be made such as a test of nerve response. Sometimes I t is necessary to take impressions of the teeth. Models made from these impressions are used to study the occlusion, the way the teeth meet. Such knowledge is often crucial for deciding the selection of treatment and materials. After examination, the dentist will present and explain any proposed treatment. After oral restoration is completed, he will ask the patient to return at particular intervals for a check up and prophylaxis, a cleaning and polishing of the teeth.
