Causes of Obesity

The epidemic of obesity is growing exponentially in our country but the question is what is causing this? Besides our genetic disposition, the hypothalamus of the brain is the operative center that regulates hunger signals. Organs such as liver, brain, fat cells, gastro intestinal tract, besides hormone-like factors (neruoendcrine) and the nervous system influence eating behavior.

There is no ideal appetite, and several hormones regulate appetite. Multiple chemical messengers, including 25 neuropeptides, affect food intake. These include neuropeptide Y a brain protein which is responsible for the consumption of extra fat and carbohydrates among animals. Likewise there are other hormones produced by brain regulates the appetite of our body.

Some researchers believe that hyper-insulinemia (high blood insulin levels) is the cause of obesity. Reports suggest that high food intake leads to hyper insulimenia. This is a serious stumbling block in the country owing to the high-glycemic food that included potatoes, pulses and sugar.

As many hormones are said to be responsible for the cause of obesity in human, huge money is being spend on researching more about this hormones to control obesity. Researchers are trying to find if modulation on some hormones can help in controlling and reducing obesity.

However, obesity seems to be very complex problem as several factors can be ruled out for the cause of weight gain. All of us are different and one particular treatment will definitely not work for the whole crowd of obese people. The right way to avoid and control obesity is to follow healthy diet and lifestyle.
