Diaper Rash

When you see a patch of inflamed, reddened skin on your baby’s bottom, don’t panic. It’s probably diaper rash. It’s common in babies during the first 15 months, especially between the eighth and the tenth month. Besides, your baby may fuss or cry when you touch the diaper area.

Why do babies get diaper rash?

Usually diaper rash occurs when the baby’s delicate skin is irritated by the chemicals and moisture in urine and stools. Soiled diapers left on for too long, diapers that chafe the skin or fit too tightly, baby wipes or lotions that react to the skin, are all common causes. Plus, when a child has diarrhea, the stool gets acidic and this too, may cause infection if not cleaned often. It could even be a fungal infection. Those rashes generally start within the creases of the skin.

Treating diaper flare-ups

Keep your baby’s skin clean and dry, to dry out the rash and when you put the diaper back on, use lots of cream, coconut oil or petroleum jelly. Put the diaper on loosely or use a diaper that’s slightly larger. If your baby’s rash doesn’t improve after a few days of applying over the counter ointments and frequent diaper changes, talk to your doctor. Sometimes, diaper rash leads to secondary infections that need medication.
